Individual Psychotherapy in New York
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is an enriching collaboration between you and a therapist, with the goal of personal growth, insight, and support. Through talking and sharing your authentic thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, you start to understand yourself and others better, develop compassion, and develop the strength and know-how to deal with problems.
It’s normal to feel nervous about starting therapy because you’re stepping into the unknown. You may worry about what to say or draw a blank when the session starts. In the beginning, I’ll want to find out about your history, what your life has been like so far, and how long the problem has been going on to gain a better overall understanding of what you’re facing. By the end of that first session, you should have a good understanding of how I conceptualize your problem, and how future sessions will go.
How does psychotherapy work?
Psychotherapy works when a trusting relationship is developed between you and the therapist, usually over a number of sessions. When you authentically share your inner life and challenges, you should feel supported, deeply heard, feel safe and challenged in the therapeutic relationship. Over time, you’ll gain insight into your own thoughts, beliefs, and feelings and how they color the way you experience life. Once you have this insight, your confidence grows and you can decide if there is anything you want to change or develop further to move your life forward. Actively engaging in talk therapy, being open and honest, reflecting on the sessions, practicing behavioral changes, setting goals, and sharing critical feedback with your therapist will give you the maximum benefit.
Anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties are all treatable once you have gained some clarity and insight. I'm a psychotherapist based in New York state, and I work with people who experience challenges that have become difficult to navigate on their own. My approach is to help you understand the nature of your problem with empathy, understanding and directness. With an interest in neuroscience, mindfulness, behavioral modification, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I often recommend exercises, books, or other activities to supplement the therapy.
